Parking.Flying,Driving

Thank you to everyone who responded to my parking issue. Decided to take your advice %26amp; turn vehicle in when we arrive. But now considering flying into K.W. %26amp; renting for trip back. Vaca. is May 13 to 19, flying into Lauderdale. My Q%26#39;s are: first %26amp; foremost, is there even a flight to K.W. from Lauderdale. If so, Approx. $ range? If small plane, How rough is ride? 2nd: For drive back, is it a pretty simple trip? Approx. time from K.W. to Lauderdale airport. We%26#39;re actually not flying out until the 20th, therefore was looking forward to traveling through the Keys %26amp; taking in the sights. Any info on that would be great. Most likely renting a vehicle that gets good fuel mileage, so can you usually make the trip on 1 tank of fuel? Last Q. this one sort of directed to PJ, (assuming you read this) I see you stayed @ the Heron House, thats where we are staying also. Have one of the Premium poolside or garden rooms. How was your stay %26amp; if we have a choice of either room, what would you recommend? Thanks again everyone for your help. Just real quick, wanted to say, wife %26amp; I popped into K.W. last May as one of the ports on a RC cruise, we took the Conch Train Tour %26amp; absolutely loved the place. Decided we had to visit for a length of time to really enjoy it.

Hi Don,

We are going to Key West May 23 to June 2, sorry we will miss you.

Sorry I can not help you with the flight. The drive will be simple as far as directions to get to FL. From KW to FL will be about 190 miles, 4 to 5 hours without stops, a little more then half a tank.

Yes we did stay at the Heron House. Both your room choices are fine. The Garden rooms will be more private because the gathering area for everything is near the pool. So I guess we would go for the Garden room. The Grounds are small but very well kept. We had a Pool room and never had a problem, but at breakfast, when it gets hot and Happy Hour there are people around the Pool area.

Hope this helps, PJ

Just out of curiosity I checked the Continental web page because I use the Continental Connection to get form Florida, either Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa or Miani, to Key West. There are flights which range from $188.00 - $204.00 per person round trip. For some reason I had to put in a return date as if no-one flies one way.

You can do the same search on Orbitz just to see who else is flying between these two cities and to see if there is a vast difference in cost.

The only time I%26#39;ve expirienced a rough ride is on landing in Key West with some cross winds. Otherwise the flight is pretty enjoyable. It%26#39;s approx 50 minutes and after about 30 minuets you can start to see ships and the texture of the water. I try to pick out land marks as we come n over the island.

USAirways Express, Gulfstream (dba Continental Connection), and Cape Air fly from FLL to EYW. USAir uses a 70 seat regional jet and the fastest flight. Gulfstream uses 19 seat Beech 1900 turboprops, and Cape Air is a part 135 carrier who flies 12 seat Cessna. The flight is only about 40~50 minutes. The ride is as rough as the weather of the day. All 3 carriers have good safety records. When the weather is good, the flight is quite nice and scenic. As far as price goes, if you book now, one way is about $120 per passenger.

I%26#39;d suggest that you reverse your idea... Drive in and fly back. The reason is that the drive back, if you%26#39;ve given Key West a proper good-bye the evening before, can be brutal.

Secondly, on the flight out, you might be able to see some of the places you%26#39;d driven and enjoyed. Just a thought.

I%26#39;ll side with Tim. If you drive back, you%26#39;ll probably wait until the last minute to leave, then not have adequate time to stop %26amp; explore because you%26#39;ll have that plane to catch.

Also, driving down from FLL is a little easier than going back. If you%26#39;ve not driven back before, there%26#39;s a tricky part going from 95 onto 595, and in traffic it comes up pretty fast %26amp; you have to be on top of your game.

However, headed down it%26#39;s a piece of cake. Plus, you can take Card Sound road and stop at Alabama Jack%26#39;s for a bite to eat and get into the old Florida feeling.

Enjoy your time on the rock!

I would agree with Seabus %26amp; CLee about the Fly %26amp; Drive vs Drive %26amp; Fly.

I did not tell you how our stay was at the Heron House. We liked it , the location is great, there is a great market called Fausto, go left out front door of HH half block to Fleming St. left again half block. Good place to stock room with beer, wine, whatever.

Heron House was our first stay in KW. The reason we have not returned is we want to try at least ten or so places before we pick the best for us.

We flew down from Fort Lauderdale in December direct to Key West - approx. 50mins flight on a 19 seater prop. %26#39;plane with Continental. The price was included in our package from the U.K. so not quoted but a fellow guest at our Hotel (who drove down) booked a return flight while there and is cost approx. $140 per couple - he couldn%26#39;t believe the price. As a previous poster says, the roughness of the ride depends very much on the weather on the day - a few years ago we had a bad experience - rain, wind and absolutely no visibility as we flew through dense clouds the whole way! You can see the cockpit up front with the windscreen wipers going like crazy and everyone clapped when we landed safely! Didn%26#39;t put us off and we have made the trip 4 times since with no problem whatsoever.

Would agree with previous posts, drive down and fly back. Key West is a very small Airport with one (quite nice) bar and absolutely nothing once you go through security (no toilets, water etc.) so you don%26#39;t need to check in too early and waste part of your last day - time better spent by the pool or doing last minute shopping!

Sure you will love your extended stay in Key West!

By the way, don%26#39;t know if you have already booked your accommodation in Fort Lauderdale but we highly recommend the Pillars at New River Sound (#1 on this site) and either dinner in the Hotel on the waterfront or at the Casablanca Cafe.

Yes...if you drive down and fly back you can have a Last Flight Out Bloody Mary at the Conch Flyer.

My first 6 visits, I drove back and forth from FLL. The car rental building in FLL is conveniently located right next to the terminal, unlike Miami, very easy.

The ride down, with the Gulf on one side and the Atlantic on the other, is glorious ! Shades of inviting blue water. It%26#39;s a nice 4 hour (give or take) ease into your KW experience. Watch the speeds ! Take it very easy. No rush, you%26#39;ll get there.

I felw out of FLL, last time. The $188- RT fare (quoted previously) is very reasonable. I did a little better this past Oct. but I think I got lucky.

Otherwise, try kayak, com . It%26#39;s a grat site that checks a bunch of carriers at once and gives you choices. The site also gives graphs of previous, actual prices of flights. Although that is no indication of future cost(s) it does give clues about travel trends (ex. le$$ Tue/Wed/Thurs) days/months, when point to point travel is more or less expensive.

Regardless, you%26#39;ll have a great time in Key West, we all here (on KW TA) are sure !

Chill,

K
