I need cheap and god hotel in orlando near atractions

What dates are you going?

I need cheap and god hotel in orlando near atractions

In orlando Cheap and Good don%26#39;t go together especially when it comes to Hotels. $89 is standard for basic hotels near the attractions. You may get cheaper but they are usually ';roach'; motels or further away from the attractions.

Wow Eddie, did';nt get enough sleep last night? The post starts out with the dates.

Eddie%26#39;s still a rookie. Give him a chance...

What about the travelodge on I drive,, we got a good deal , not sure how much per night though and it was a good but basic hotel. The quality inn international charges $69 per night aswell

eveylyn79,

i called rodeway on international to make my reservations a week or so ago and they lowed the price when i told them i could get something cheaper. we got a rate of $49/night. also they told me there was a discount for having stayed there before.

good luck!

Oops! Sorry evelyn79.

Thanks Guys.. I have stay at the travelodge in the past and it was a nigthmare, but the roadway inn was ok. Any how if you find something else at a good price with good reviews let me know..

Thanks again....

evelyn79,

when you stayed at rodeway, did you use their shuttle service to go to any of the parks? if so, did it work ok?

thanks!

where is the best place to buy dollars ?

Hi, can anyone tell me where the best place to buy dollars is, I hear people talking about buying online for the best exchange rate, but I%26#39;m not sure. There are six adults in our party and I have also been told we would get a better deal if we all clubbed together, HELP I%26#39;M CONFUSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

where is the best place to buy dollars ?

Best mainstream place I%26#39;ve found so far is travelex.co.uk, they also have a tracking chart and details of whether rate is falling or rising. You collect the currency at the airport, and it%26#39;s commission free.

There%26#39;s also crowncurrencyexchange.co.uk, but if you%26#39;re looking to buy soon I%26#39;ve found they don%26#39;t give the rates they show on their website when you email them for a quote I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;re good for long term purchases though.

Can%26#39;t say I%26#39;ve seen anyone offering better rates for larger amounts, it%26#39;s usually businesses that benefit from that, and you%26#39;re probably into many thousands to get a better rate.

Worst places are high street travel agents.

HTH

where is the best place to buy dollars ?

Marks and spencers also do money exchange at good rates. The best i have found is bureau de changes in London.

Crown Exchange are offering $2.02 to the pound at the moment.

Their rates very dependant on when you want the money delivered.

They will email offers to you.

Vegas, I got really disillusioned with Crown, I see the good rates on their site, then when i request a quote that%26#39;s not what they offer me. They leave it like 12 hours before quoting me, then reduce the rates on their website, naughty blighters. I think they%26#39;re gearded towards long term investment.

Love the new image, you must have worked really hard on that body.

I used Crowncurrency. They are not very quick when it comes to emails, so that could be why the rate had dropped by the time they replied.

I spoke to them on the phone, whilst waiting for a reply to my email, and we got the advertised rate.

They always sem to have the best rate for those who are happy to pre-purchase their dollars.

Going places has an offer at the mo $1000 for about 拢532

do crownexchange only deal in cash or do they do travellers cheques as well ?? are any TCs accepted anywhere in states or is it only american express ?? i just received a email from crown currency and they offered 1.9303 for delivery on 8th feb

paul

Kitty that is about $1.87 - aren%26#39;t M+S doing better than that?

I always speak to Crown on the phone if I am interested in any deals. Like I said it is dependent on how long in the future the trip is. You can see what their game is but you can make your money go further if you are prepared to have a punt and then you end up lucky. I have one lot coming out in May at $2 and some Euros coming out earlier - I will tell you how I go on.

Don%26#39;t go crazy loading up on U.S. currencey. If you have a major credit card you will get the best exchange rate, have a real good record of your purchases, and don%26#39;t need to worry about ';flashin%26#39; cash'; some unseemly types may be watching.

The papers today were talking about another couple of rate rises here, do you think this will push the $ up even more?

  • Info on Sea World

We have been to Orlando many times and are planning another trip in May. We have been to Disney and Universal many times before. People keep suggesting Sea World they say it%26#39;s cheaper and a load of fun. Could anyone give me any info? I know it%26#39;s hard to compare them to Disney or Universal. Anyone like Sea World better? Let me know. I have 4 kids 14, 10, 6, 4

    Info on Sea World

seawold are offering payaday go free all year now dunno if its for tourists tho.. its around $67 each....

    Info on Sea World

It is like comparing apples to oranges to me. They are all great in their own way. I couldn%26#39;t imagine going down without going to Sea World. It is a favorite of ours for sure. I called them about the Fun Card. Pay for a day and come back all year and they told me that they do sell that as an option for tourist too. It is just marketed toward Floridians since they would get the most benefit from it. I%26#39;ve been to Sea World 3 times and will be going a fourth next month. Sea World is not so overwhelming. One could do it in a day if you start at opening.

I adore Sea World. Your kids will love it. They have added new attractions in the last couple of years. My sons 3 and 9 like it more than Disney. You will have a great time!

seawold is great been 7 times and still grin like a chesire cat at clyde and seymore!!!!

Tony7 - do you think the mime artist is the greatest? I%26#39;d never seen Clyde and Seamore before and laughed until I cried.

missed the clyde show last year tony7.....should i make it a priority?

I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll regret SW. It%26#39;s different from the other parks in that there%26#39;s not as many rides(only a few, but they%26#39;re great for thrill seekers!) but SW offers a lot of animal shows. When you arrive, or beforehand if you can, be sure to check the show times, %26amp; make a plan, because there%26#39;s quite a bit of walking. If you can go for 2 days-all the better. The thing my kids love most about SW is the ability to feed the animals(seals ,stingrays, dolphins) There%26#39;s something more serene %26amp; ';real'; about SW, because the creatures are living, not pre-programmed animatronics!

yes its good to get there early and watch him, its so funny!!! he,s very good at spontaneous impressions!!!! fab!!!

joanne you will smile all day after seeing them!! grin factor..... endless..........

Are these shows such as Clyde %26amp; Seamore extra or are they included in your Sea World pass.

    Spirit of Aloha

We booked this dinner show and could only get Cat.3 seats, will we be disappointed with them and is the show good?

    Spirit of Aloha

I don%26#39;t know about seat location but it%26#39;s the exact same show we saw in Maui on the beach. We actually wondered if they were the same people so it%26#39;s authentic and we enjoyed it.

    Spirit of Aloha

oreo-trip, the audience area only has 2 levels so even though you will be in the back area it will be elevated so that you will be able to see just fine. We%26#39;ve been twice , most recently in November and we truly enjoy the food (fabulous ribs, and fantastic pineapple bread etc) and find the show to be top notch! You won%26#39;t be disappointed.

    Longboat Key Club Resort

Hi. We%26#39;ll be staying at the Longboat Key Club Resort and have a group of four parties -- extended family. Would like to request the nicest digs there. Are all four of the buildings equally good? Can anyone say whether the return visitors there request a specific building. Any tips would be appreciated.

Also interestedin the best restaurants on the Key.

    thank you!

    Longboat Key Club Resort

There are many types of accomodations at the LBKC

. I had a Jr. Suite which overlooked gardens. Last August some of the buildings with a gulfview were being remodeled. Go to their website for more info regarding sizes and views.

    For dining:

Euphemia Haye- expensive and tables are close together. But highly rated.

    Pattigeorges- nice marina view dining

Drydock WaterfrontGrill- casual with good seafood

    Mattison%26#39;s Steakhouse- upscal steak seafood

    Harrys Continental Kitchen

Beach Bistro- Holmes Beach highly rated

    Cafe on the Bay

and more on the Mainland and St. Armands Circle..

This is simply to add a ';Ditto'; to SRQgirl%26#39;s list of restaurants on Longboat. I might move Harry%26#39;s up a bit higher on her list (they have some creative cuisine and a great wine list, also a take-out service where you could eat back at your placeat the LBK Club one night if you want to). Cafe by the Bay used to be ';by the bay'; with a nice view of a marina, but they recently moved further north on the island; I%26#39;m not sure what it is like now.

  • kids only??

I am planning on going to gasparilla with about 7 friends between the ages of 21 and 26. Now, I looked at some websites and they make it seem like this is going to be a children%26#39;s event. Are we too old for this? Will drinking be allowed? Thanks!

    kids only??

Not on Jan 27th. Kid parade was Jan20th

    kids only??

Yep, there%26#39;s a kids parade and an adult parade on different weekends. Not sure about the drinking during the parade or in public.

There will be plenty of adult fun on the 27th, the childrens parade was last weekend. They will be selling beer along the parade route, but you can bring alcohol, no glass bottles(actually, the law states that it is illegal to have an open container, but with 700,000 plus, they cops are looking for out of control drunks), so with that note, drink up, and party down this saturday, this is my 19th gasparilla, it%26#39;s a blast!!!

I%26#39;m sad to admit that I needed to use the barf bags located on Mission Space a couple of years ago. I haven%26#39;t had the desire to try out the less intense side yet. The only other ride that makes me a little quesy is the tea cups.

Concerned about motion sickness on rides?

Mission Space. If you don%26#39;t make it in time to a barf bag, the rest of the crew suffer. Amazing what centrifical force can do.

Mission Space seems to be the ride that gets to most.

It even made an ex-helicopter pilot queazy!

What is it about this ride that does it?

mission space worse than BTTF in universal?????......because the lady in front almost had a nasty surprise on that!!

    Thanks!

South Beach hotel recommendation - near the night life

jwkwed: July is low season and you will have many nice

choices in your price range, but weekend prices go up

some. There are promotions and specials that become available

closer to your arrival. Check the reviews here for hotels like

Park Central, Royal Palm, or even Strand which are all

a five to ten minute walk to almost everything. You might

want to book one that could be canceled and then see if a 4*

like the National will be doing promotions or what TravelZoo

or Quickbook have to offer. Last year I was able to get a cabana room(very nice) at the National for less than $200. Hope this

can get you started, anything on Collins below 20th or Ocean

South Beach hotel recommendation - near the night life

Take a look at the place I%26#39;m looking at; Atlantica Hotel and Suites. It is clean and appears to be close by lots of activity yet i9s inexpensive. Check their website. Congrats on the upcoming wedding too!

The Sea Chest is the one I%26#39;d recommend. It is about a 6-8 block (equivalent) walk to John%26#39;s Pass. The Sea Chest is very clean and quiet -- family run hotel on the beach. There is a great beach sidewalk that runs south from the Sea Chest for a morning stroll.

  • Camping in the Keys

My husband and i just decided to drive down to the Florida Keys for a few days Jan 21-25. Do you think we will have trouble finding a campsite for a 30 foot RV on the beach ? Any recommendations? We only have 9 days and are driving from NC. Need to see the ocean!

    Camping in the Keys

There ara a couple of KOA campgrounds in the keys, The one at Fiesta Key used to be pretty decent. Not sure how any of the campgrounds are since the hurricanes. They have a website. You might check with the chamber of commerce. They will send you and info packet which will list all of the campgrounds, restaurants, etc.

    Camping in the Keys

While I think it would be booked, the choice for me would be bahia honda state park. http://www.bahiahondapark.com/

While oceanfront sites probably don%26#39;t accomodate your RV, they have site that should work--if available.

Good luck and I know you%26#39;ll have great weather.

bahia honda is pretty well booked but you can try for a spot in the am.when you get there just in case there was a cancellation. since it%26#39;s a state park, you can look up reserveamerica.com to try to reserve a spot. long key, i believe, has reopened and has ocean sites. bahia honda campsites open onto a little bay looking to u.s. 1, not the ocean side, not that it really matters. there aren%26#39;t any real beaches ex bahia honda that i know of. it gets so crowded here around then that you really should try for reservations somewhere. most people get a site and drive to the water or into key west. don%26#39;t try to drive that rig into key west, tho, you can%26#39;t park it anywhere, and they will ticket you. there%26#39;s several nice rv parks all up the keys, but by now all oceanfront will be snagged for sure. jolly roger in marathon is nice - a regular campground, expensive, like everything else here. in consolation, the water is everywhere, you will be near the water no matter where you stay, bring bikes and sunscreen. it was pretty hot today!

This is probably too late to help you guys but maybe it will help others.

We have a 26 foot airstream and stayed at Boyd%26#39;s on Stock Island. Any RV park is going to be very expensive and the closer you get to Key West, the more you pay. Since Bohia Honda is booked years in advance, we stayed at Boyds - $95 a night and your pretty crammed in there - but - your a 20 minute bike ride to key west and its a pretty nice place with very friendly people. Also, you can pretty much always get a spot, even last minute.

We are now staying at Curry Hammock State Park near Marathon, and if you can get a ressie I would highly recc. this place. Tons of space, beautiful ,new RV park.

    Good luck!

    Help with things to do...

We come to the Orlando area every year and have seen so much. We are looking for some new things to do that would be appropriate for 2 adults, a 12 yo and a 5 yo. We are actually staying between Orlando and Daytona the beginning of Feb. We have already done the following: Disney, Universal, Sea World, Celebration, Daytona raceway, St. Augustine, The Central FL Zoo, Blue Springs, Homosassa Springs, Amazing Exotics, Kennedy Space Center and airboat rides in Christmas FL . We don%26#39;t mind driving a couple hours for something worthwile. Any Ideas

    Help with things to do...

Gatorland is pretty neat. Only takes about 1/2 day or a little over and is not too expensive. For theme parks you didin%26#39;t mention Busch Gardens. That would be quite a drive but it is the park I like best. There is also Lion Country Safari in West Palm. I have not been there is years so I don%26#39;t know how good it is anymore. It%26#39;s a shame Marineland went so far down hill. That used to be a good park.

    Help with things to do...

what about going to the beach? seems pretty obvious :)

    what about discovery cove?

    medival times dinner show?

    universal city walk

fun spot... if its still there.

    wet n wild

have you considered going somewhere else to vacation? if you have done it and seen it all? I mean... maybe come back in a few years when the little one is older and they can both do all the big kid rides together? not being rude but maybe something to think about...

I know you are the wrong side of Orlando for Busch Gardens/Tampa but I would still make the effort to drive over in that direction.

What about spending a couple of days down in south Florida - maybe around Ft Lauderdale/Hollywood area?? Lots to do down there - Miami Seaquarium, best outlet mall in world, great beaches, boat trips, Los Olas Blvd in Ft Lauderdale, etc, etc...........

We go every year because my fil lives there and my father winters there. We stay with them and then do a few touristy things with the kids.

GatorLand might be a good option as we have yet to do that. We always hit the beach, but honestly in early Feb. we rarely get to swim there. Thought about Discovery Cove and the other water parks, that will depend on how warm it is the week we are there. I really don%26#39;t want to spend a fortune.

Thanks for the ideas. If you have any others, please let me know. We do enjoy nature so it needn%26#39;t be an ';amusement'; activity, just something for all ages.

dali museum in st pete as well as the pier and they have a kids museum...i think it is the st pete science center

winter park boat tour, stroll down park ave, orlando magic game, ucf, stetson, rollins college basketball game, wekiva springs...canoeing the wekiva river, rock springs run (maybe a bit chilly to tube it), morse museum or orlando museum of art, merrit island wildlife refuge, canaveral nat%26#39;l seashore,

devils millhopper, paynes prairie, florida museum of natural history....all in gainesville

    tarpon springs sponge boat ride

    ringling museum in sarasota

looking for sharks teeth in venice

    silver springs in ocala

depending on how long you are staying, baseball spring training starts the end of feb

Try Silver Springs and Cypress Gardens for something new. Both are great fun.

    weekly bike rentals

I am staying at a Sundial condo for a week and want to rent a bike for a week. my question is where do I put the bike? Does the Sundial have bike racks where I can chain the bike? Or do I simply put it inside the condo?

    Thanks

    weekly bike rentals

You can call Billy%26#39;s bike rentals and they should be able to tell you where you can store bikes at Sundial. Their # is 1-800-575-8717 .

They will deliver the bikes and pick them up at the end of the week.

    weekly bike rentals

www.billysrentals.com and www.finnemores.com Both will deliver and pick up bikes. Unlike many places, you can leave the bikes in the parking area and there are bike racks as well, but not all over the place, unless they have new ones. You won%26#39;t need to put it inside the condo unless you%26#39;re planning to rent some super bike. The bike paths are flat as pancakes on Sanibel so that would be a waste.

Sundial had guards on their parking lots in season. Not for security but to keep out people who wanted to use the lots to park and walk to the beach. It drove me crazy when I was there because visitors would take up the spaces behind the beachfront condos If you%26#39;re in the %26#39;new%26#39; end you can always lock it to the pilings underneath.

    You misspelled the one website.

    www.finnimores.com

    well, that happens.

';the one website'; grammar please ;-)

Kissimee old Town V Pop Century-- Not driving

Thinking of going trip on 14/04/07. Dont drive, just me and husband going. Questions-

    - Is that a busy time to go?

    - Like the sound of Kissimee old town, would getting taxis back and forth to WDW parks be expensive?

    - Alternatively stay at Pop Century and taxi to visit Kissimee area?

We are going for a week and would not visit a park every day. Only going to WDW parks, done Universal etc before.

Would appreciate any help/tips with this dilema.

Kissimee old Town V Pop Century-- Not driving

    1. Going on April 14 would be right at the end of the very very busy week before and after Easter period. Once you get past that first weekend, it won%26#39;t be as busy, but not slow either.

    2. Depends on how often you%26#39;d like to visit Old Town. Pop Century would be a much better base for visiting the Disney theme parks, with the complimentary Disney transportation, and its not in too bad a location for jumping off to go to Old Town either. If you were only really wanting to go to Old Town once or twice, then staying at Disney would result in much cheaper cab fares than staying by Old Town, if you%26#39;re visiting the parks. Now if you stayed in a hotel by Old Town which has a Disney shuttle, that would be better, but a Disney shuttle which leaves once or twice a day (and comes back once or twice a day) is no match for Disney transport that runs around the clock while the parks are open. Then again, it also depends on the cost of the hotels, as I would expect that you would pay more for Pop Century than a place by Old Town.

Kissimee old Town V Pop Century-- Not driving

Are you going to OldTown to ride the ';Sling Shot';?

EddieK%26#39;s advice is good...it will be a very busy time and you may have a hard time getting a room at Pop at this point.

From my experience, an afternoon or an evening at Old Town is sufficient. It%26#39;s not that big and not that amazing that it%26#39;s worth staying offsite for. There is a very nice hotel right next door - Comfort Suites Maingate East - but other than Old Town and a very busy 192, that%26#39;s pretty much it in Kissimmee.

Pop Century is a nice value resort and the transportation can%26#39;t be beat. You don%26#39;t have to do parks every day yet still enjoy staying onsite. Take an afternoon and travel around to all the different resorts to check them out; grab a bus to Downtown Disney and then if you want, grab a cab from there to the Premium Outlets.

Thanks to those who have replied tonight, you have helped me decide what to do. Not sure about the %26#39;slingshot%26#39; thing-will have a look first and decide!

Try Comfort suites maingate east. Right next to old town. They have a disney shuttle.

  • The Aegean in September 2007

I%26#39;m thinking of taking my family to the Aegean in mid-September. In reading other postings, it sounds like the beach was ';gone'; after the hurricane . Is that still the case? Also, how can I know if the pictures of individual units at the Aegean as shown on Fundestin are post-hurricane? Same question for the grounds as shown. Are these current pix?

    The Aegean in September 2007

The Aegean has been closed due to hurricanes for a couple of years. I didn%26#39;t realize they had finished the repairs.

What is the web site you want us to look at. The exact address please.

    The Aegean in September 2007

Here%26#39;s the website I was referring to...and the exact unit that looked interesting to me.

    http://www.fundestin.com/aegean.html

    https:/…

The best thing to do is contact them and ask them specifically those questions. They are fair questions to ask and they should be honest with you. FunDestin just aquired that property and they are off-site managed, meaning there is no office on property if you need anything.

In May 2006 (last time I%26#39;ve been to Destin), Aegean was still closed but significant work was being done on the grounds (new palm trees, grass, pool work, etc...). Unsure about any work done to the units.

The strip of beach in front of the Aegean was hurt quite bad. All of Holiday Isle suffered erosion, but from what I saw it was the worst in front of the Aegean. From the end of the boardwalk you had only a few feet until you hit Gulf of Mexico water.

I stayed on Holiday Isle (near the Aegean) in Nov. 2006, and the Aegean was up and functioning (finally). It had been closed for a couple of years since Hurricane Ivan in 2004. I assume there must have been some sort of insurance problem that caused such a long delay in repairs. In Nov., the landscaping looked fine, and I don%26#39;t recall the beach being especially narrow in comparison to other Holdiay Isle properties. There is still a beach, it%26#39;s just pretty narrow. As long as there are no more hurricanes this year, I think you will be fine staying there in mid-Sept. If you were to go at the height of the summer season, the narrow beach might result in it being a little crowded. In Sept., that won%26#39;t be a problem.

The Holiday Isle property with an acute beach problem is Jetty East. Part of the Jetty East building was built closer to the Gulf than other beachfront condos on Holiday Isle, and as a result, it now sticks out into the Gulf. It%26#39;s bad enough that if the tide is high or there are big waves, you can no longer walk down the beach past Jetty East to access the east jetty and all the nice beach area and sand dunes there.

There is no way to tell with those photos when they were taken.

I would contact them and ask.

The Beach at The Aegean is restored. The Aegean opened in June of 2006 to guests. There was still quite a bit of work being done to individual units and the elevators were not operating. But soon after all of that has been completed and the Aegean may be even nicer since the work was completed. The photos on the website are most definitely post hurricane. Both individual units and the grounds.

Excuse me, but there has been no beach renourishment projects as of yet on Holiday Isle.

They had some sand put on the beaches from dredging the pass, however, it is my understanding most of that sand has already washed away.

I am the Rental Manager for The Aegean and much of the beach is back and looking great. I was on site from May until November 2006. The Aegean is in great shape now. In the beginning of last season it was a little rough with guests and the continued effort to complete the grounds and units. Some of the non-rental units were still being repaired. However now it is completed and The Aegean is about 90% booked for this season and booking into 2008. The guests were happy that stayed last season and I think they will be even more happy this season. Much of which are the same guests that rebooked while visiting last time. The photos are certainly post hurricane for we could not have taken photos prior to the redo because of the damage the Aegean sustained. Take a drive over and look at if for yourself if you have questions that it is not completed or in great shape. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I have spent countless hours at this property and I will tell you it may look even better than it did before the Hurricane hit.

Then you know the beach in front of the Aegean has not been restored, or renourished.

I understand you are trying to pump your units. You may want to read the rules to posting before future posts.

Has anyone rented from this company??

We are coming to Key West March 1 for a week. There are six adults on this trip. I was unable to find a condo at Truman Annex or any other of the popular places recommeded (that are close to Duval). However, I found a company called The Real Estate Co. of the Fla Keys that has rental houses.

They rent houses a few blocks off Duval and they look very nice. I am hoping some of the regulars on this forum have heard of or used this company. Thanks for your help!!

Has anyone rented from this company??

i%26#39;m not familiar with them,i have used athomeinkeywest with great success. good luck

Has anyone rented from this company??

Yes, I heard of them. Or you can call Sunrise suites at 305-396-6661. They are all 2 bed room suites, 1 king with bath,1 queen with bath, full kitchen, and sofa sleeper that can put 6 people max. per unit.

interesting places to visit in or near Port St. Lucie

We are spending a week at Club Med and we may not leave the compound but we wondered about any interesting places to visit nearby? I thought about driving to the Everglades for the day but my family thinks it%26#39;s too far for a day trip. We have a toddler who loves animals and being outside. Thanks!

interesting places to visit in or near Port St. Lucie

There is Lion Country Safari in West Palm. You drive thru in your car %26amp; see the animals up close and they have paddle boats, etc. You could also drive up to Cape Canaveral to Kennedy Space Center. There are also air boat tours in Kissimee if you want to see alligators. Gatorland in the south end of Orlando is another small park, has nature trails, train ride, gator wrestling, etc. Theres also a petting zoo in Orlando where you can mikl a cow or goat. Green Meadow I think is the name. Melbourne also has a nice zoo.

All of these places are within about 2 to 2 1/2 hours drive.

interesting places to visit in or near Port St. Lucie

Many thanks!! We%26#39;ll definitely try to get to some of these places.

Go to myflorida.com and click on the visitors site. There will be more suggestions there on things to see %26amp; do.

Thank you, I will do that.

    2 weeks in Florida

We%26#39;re hading over to Florida in three weeks time and really don%26#39;t know where to go. We%26#39;ll probably spend our first 5 days in the theme parks in Orlando and were going to head down to the Keys after this. It is a long drive and I want to know if its worth it. Also, there seems to be lots more to Florida than theme parks and the Keys so what would you recommend as the ';got to see'; areas?

    2 weeks in Florida

Look at www.floridastateparks.org and take a look at the parks in the ';central'; portion of the map. There are many parks with natural springs where you can canoe/kayak, hike, or just enjoy a picnic. It%26#39;s a different side of Florida.

    2 weeks in Florida

go to myflorida.com and click on visitor. That will give you some input on things to see and do.

Theres also St. Augustine, similar to the keys in that is it laid out for tourists, many shops, restaurants, motels, etc. all in walking distance, St. Augustine is close to the beach and has lots of history. It is only about 2 hours from Disney 3 at the most.

West coast has Ft. Meyers, Clearwater, Sanibel %26amp; Captiva Islands, nice white sandy beaches, nature areas not too far from Everglades if you want to do an airboat tour, etc.

We love the Keys and go every year. We stay in either Marathon or Islamorada most of the time. Occaisionally we stay in Key West but not when the kids are with us. They are many places to explore, small shops, state parks, nature trails, etc. It%26#39;s a really great place.

If your kids like to spend time outdoors and like nature I would say yes for the keys. There is shopping but there are no malls and no Wal-Mart, (Thank God) There are many great restaurants and not all of them are just seafood.

If it was a warmer time of year I would say visit some of the springs in northwest florida, They have tubing and snorkeling in the springs and its a beautiful area. Howeve a little cold at this time of year.

    Girls in bikinis

I should have been more detailed in my posting. I know a truckdriver that goes down to florida and said that there are girls wearing very skimpy thongs and standing on street corners selling hot dogs and lemonade and things of that nature. He said it was all over florida including orlando. Maybe he%26#39;s just wishing, but he says its true. He said he went to lowes and they were there also outside selling the hot dogs. Not exactly steering clear or looking for these girls just wondering if it is in fact true or hes just a nut...lol. I am from ohio so the only time you see girls in bikinis is at the pool. i think i would be shocked to see this on just any street.

    Girls in bikinis

It is true. There used to be alot more of them than there is now. Some citys have made laws banning them (not necessarily the hot dog vending, but the skimpy attire). They would basically have a small hot dog steamer cart, that is actually a small trailer they would tow behind their car. They would setup at a street corner and all the guys would pull over for a dog, a soda, and an eyefull.

    Girls in bikinis

Go to Daytona Beach during spring break or bike week. Or Miami Beach anytime. Most towns have banned the thong and the topless hot dog vendors.

I thought i was set on picking venice to be our vacation spot, but after read about red tide I unsure. Somepeople say one thing, some say another. I haven%26#39;t dismissed the gulf coast yet, but i%26#39;m not looking into oother areas. Any other info on red tide and what i can expect it to be like in May in Venice area would be great.

here%26#39;s what i%26#39;m looking for, where i%26#39;ve been, liked; dislike ect.... any input be helpful.

small and quiet towns on beach! we are traveling with 3 year old. we%26#39;re a ';up early, in bed early'; kind of family. I don%26#39;t need or want fast food, walmart, theme parks. Nature parks, hiking trails, natural beaches are all plus. The town of Venice looked great to me.

I liked st. augustine: however there wasn%26#39;t great sand beach that I%26#39;m hoping for. Jacksonville was nice, but way out of my price range. Florida Keys too far, not enough beach. I need town big enough to have rentals other than hotel. I want rental with kitchen so we don%26#39;t have to eat out.

My husband thought coco beach, but he is remembering what it was like 10+ years ago.

I would like to be under two hours from airport.

help, really hitting wall on where to even start looking. hoping to travel last week april/ first week of may.

    where to go

This was done for Sanibel but is pertinent to any area along the Gulf.

    tripadvisor.com/Travel-g34616-c22818/Sanibel鈥?/a>

Just ignore the red drift algae as it isn%26#39;t the issue that red tide is up around Venice.

    where to go

On the east coast try Melbourne or Vero Beach. Melbourne is like what cocoa was 10 years ago. Both are small towns. Melbourne has a great zoo. If you don%26#39;t mind the size of the town of Jacksonville or St. Augustine you probably wouldn%26#39;t mind Cocoa Beach. Just has more hotels and hi-rises than it used to have.

Of course west coast beaches have softer sand and more seashells.

beach east of west of Orlando March 16-20

My wife will be in Orlando for a conference between March 10-16 and I will be joining her near the end. My question is we are looking for a nice beach to relax at be it on the Gulf side or Atlantic after the conference is over for four or five days. All we need are some chairs, a few books, something to sip on and the ocean to look at and were happy. (a nice moderately priced hotel would help as well) Any suggestions?

beach east of west of Orlando March 16-20

Melbourne or Vero Beach on the east coast, Clearwater or Ft. Meyers on the west coast.

    Emerald Shores Hotel

I booked an ocean efficiency room at the Emerald Shores Hotel for next month. Could anyone give me some feedback on whether this was a good decision or not?

    Thanks

    Emerald Shores Hotel

I was debating between Emerald Shores %26amp; Acapulco Hotel %26amp; Resort. Pretty much the same rate. I did however decide on the Acapulco Hotel %26amp; Resort. I know both are wonderful. I spoke to someone on Daytona Beach Forum and her parents stay at the Emerald and love it. The only reason why I chose the Acapulco was that they just renovated this hotel after the last hurricane and have a totally new pool area. I%26#39;m a pool person and family loves beach. You will be happy at the Emerald!

but we can go farther from downtown and take the bus

what part of Fort Lauderdale is good for one day only just to walk around and see the main sites, have a dinner and breakfast and then fly home!

    thanks for replies.

    sticker shocker hotel rates!

Well, I%26#39;ve been to Vancouver and first must tell you that, unlike your city, Ft. Lauderdale has no real Downtown- only a small cluster of government offices in an area that dies after they close.

There are three areas that would be conducive to what you want to do and I looked up a few hotels for your dates to see what is available:

    1. Las Olas Blvd: This is our major strolling street of restaurants, clubs, shops and galleries. Unfortunately ther is only one hotel there , the Riverside, a very charming place. On the hotel%26#39;s website www.riversidehotel.com they have the lowest rate of $229 for your date- which is for a room ';assigned on arrival'; which frequently will be their smallest rooms ( double bed) in their oldest section rather than their newer tower. Rates go up from there.

Also, no shuttle to/from Airport or Cruiseport, so taxi fare would need to be added. There is a Sun Trolley that runs along Las Olas up to and along the beach ( 50 cents a trip I think)

    2. Seventeenth Street Causeway- This is the street where the Port Entry is located ( next to the Convention Center) and is a walkable street lined with many hotels, restaurants and not so many shops- just things like drugstores and groceries. Many hotels there are used for pre and post cruise and tend to be heavily booked. The most reasonable with availability would seem to be Holiday Inn Express Convention Center @$192 from the HI website. There is another HI Express called Airport/Seaport, but it is actually much further away and not in an area nice for walking. The next most reasonable , Extended Stay is fully booked. Another hotel , Fort Lauderdale Grande, is a bit more expensive ($239) and has mixed reviews. The Grande provides no shuttles- the HI Express does as far as I know. All these hotels have close access to the Water Taxi ( for sightseeing , not good for transportation at %11 pp for an all day pass)

    3. A1A- The road that runs north and south along the beach. Couldbe walkable, but there is lots of construction in many spots No free shuttles , but many hotels on the south end are reasonably close to the Port ( but not the Airport) The hotel I would recommend there is my old Standby, The Best Western Oceanside which is $179 on Travelocity for your date- includes a continental breakfast. The Sun Trolley runs along the area in front and could take you up and across Las Olas if you wanted to enjoy that. The Water Taxi docks across the street at Bahia Mar. You would have to pay fro Cruise port transportation ( pretty close) and airport transportation ( maybe $25 shared by all occupants - maybe you could find a coiple to share it to the Airport...

I think if I were choosing I%26#39;d pick the Best Western and jump on the Trolley to Las Olas to dine and stroll.

The other places I saw on a Travelocity search are either poorly located or not in very nice condition- I didn%26#39;t see anything at a lesser rate , I thought would work.

Are you going on the Jewel for your cruise? We%26#39;re thinking of a repositioning cruise and that one is a possible choice.

Hope you find a good accomodation!

    sticker shocker hotel rates!

My son just came back from an 8 night cruise on the Jewel. He had a great time. It is a wonderful ship.

I have been wanting to do a repositioning cruise too. My husband doesn%26#39;t want to go because he is prone to seasickness so i may take one of my daughters.

Thanks a lot for the help you give and hope to track down that place as soon as we get the airfare down....so were you in Vancouver BC ? hope you like our city.

    cheers

Hi P954...glad your son enjoyed it and looks like we will also...

just wondering if he would know what the tipping arrangement policy is... I prefer to tip my own way ...the housekeeper, the cooks

and the waiter,etc... Can we opt out of the daily tipping charge of 10.00 per person per day?

Also if I may indulge on your son%26#39;s trips to the ports of call and other tips or suggestions on the way, thanks

    Church Street Station

Is there anyone who remembers the good old days?

Rosie O%26#39;Gradies, Cheyanne Saloon? etc from the Church Street Station of maybe 8 or more years back - I was just wondering whether this area had been remodelled or completed (it was still %26#39;under development%26#39; last time I was there).

I have to say, I thought this was one of the livelier and more original places for entertainment - I%26#39;ve still got a Rosie O%26#39;Gradys drinks glass somewhere (a Flaming something if I remember right).

Any news? Is it worth revisiting if it%26#39;s been redeveloped? Or is it less %26#39;touristy%26#39; now?

    Church Street Station

    Big fat bump

    Church Street Station

I have a vague memory of this place... where exactly is it?

We thought it was fun too, but I think I read on here before that it%26#39;s no longer there.

the chruch street station as you knew it is toast

i haven%26#39;t been down there for a loooong time but, and someone can correct me, the old church street station part now has at least one restaurant, some office space, club paris (soon to change names),

here is the link for the new area

    www.churchstreetevents.com/index_about.cfm

there are still a number of bars and restaurants closer to orange ave

it was bought by lou pearlman (boy band promoter...back street boys, etc) and some investors...they were supposed to / are / could be putting recording studios down there and he moved all of his offices down there too....i think he got some coin from the city to redevelop but has gotten a lot of bad press lately about himself and his company http://www.t-con.com/

i had some large times down there when it was in it%26#39;s heyday

    Thanks jt

Me too, in its heyday. I guess there was too much competition from down the road, or perhaps it was difficult to persuade tourists to travel the extra distance from the sanctity of I-drive etc.

Fond memories though, interesting to wander round and excellent entertainment. Hope something good happens with the new project.

pleasure island and citiwalk kinda killed it....b4 they opened, church street was really the only one stop place like that and the downtown bar scene at that time was fairly non existant....unlike today

I went to Church Street Station once with a girlfriend and we enjoyed a wonderful meal, saw the can-can girls at Rosie%26#39;s and watched some brilliant line dancing - I love to see it done properly.

The next time I took my husband - thought he would enjoy it - but he wasn%26#39;t impressed so we never went again. I was sorry to hear it had closed though.

  • What Suite hotel to choose???? HELP

We are planning an Orlando vacation in March. We want to stay in a suite-type hotel, separate bedroom, kitchen, etc. We are also interested in breakfast in the a.m. and cocktail hour in the evening. Also, we would like to be able to catch some sun and lay by the pool for a day or two. Can anyone recommend a nice place to stay that has all the above and is also clean? HELP. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

What Suite hotel to choose???? HELP

Either the Staybridge suites LBV or the Embassy Suites LBV offers what you are interested in-though the Staybridge suites has a full kitchen, the Embassy Suites has a nicer pool.

What Suite hotel to choose???? HELP

    Hi, bubsue:

Also take a look at Floriday%26#39;s. We stayed there in May / June and found it a great choice. There are many reviews of the place available from others who have stayed there as well...most of them highly favorable.

Look in the left hand margin for ';Deals on Orlando Hotels';. If you click on Floridays under that heading, you will be able to read the reviews.

Another vote for Floridays. For breakfast, you can either make something in your suite or go to the cafe. There is a nice bar by the pool for cocktails in the evening. Not to mention the in room whirlpool tub, big enough fo two.

Try Comfort Suites Maingate East or Homewood Suites on international drive. Both are excellent.

Residence Inn lake Buena Vista also has everything you%26#39;re looking for. Large free breakfast, close to Disney, %26amp; last I checked great TA reviews.

    temporary relocating to Daytona

Bad time to look for a hotel during those months. Its ';busy season'; during those months and rates are rather high.

    try looking at: alexisapts.freeyellow.com

You might be able to get a short-term lease at that apartment building.

denverjay, do you have any specific skills? I%26#39;m a business owner in the area and know others that are as well. Perhaps, I can hook you up with someone for the short time your here.

    renting in oceanwalk

I found a great price for a 2 bedroom unit in oceanwalk for July 8-15,2007 from vrbo.com. The man says to give him my name address and telephone he will then give me a confirmation letter from oceanwalk and rental agreement. I need to sign and write him a personal check for the amount. Does this sound right? Thanks

    renting in oceanwalk

We have rented through vrbo with no problems. Have you talked to the man on the phone? We start with contacting through vrbo then a phone conversation in which many questions are asked by us. We also ask for more pictures ot the unit and when they were taken.

Then the owner sends us the contract and we send a security desposit for damages and if we cancel the deal the deposit is lost if it canceled less than 30 days upon arriival. Our total amount for the rental has not been due until 30 days before we arrive. The owner we have used recently even let us wait until we got there to pay him and met us at the condo, this was not Ocean Walk. We have always paid with a personal check and then received our deposit back within 10 days of leaving.

So to answer does this sound right, only thing I would suggest is not sending in anything unless you have taked to him and make copies of any rental agreement you sign.

I am telling you how it has worked for us, maybe a couple of owners will let you know how they handle their rentals.

    renting in oceanwalk

I am an owner who advertises on VRBO.

What information would you like to know?

If this person is putting your name on a timeshare reservation, you will get a confirmation letter from Wyndham Resorts stating that he is the owner and you are the guest.

If you are renting a wholly owned condo, he will need to contact owner services to throw your name on a reservation.

Chances are good that he will be sending you the info received from owner services.

I personally fax over an authorization on my guest%26#39;s day of arrival.

Then there is no ';confirmation'; from Wyndham or owner services, but I do throw a formal authorization, which includes my phone number and contact info in case there is a problem at check in.

My biggest fear is that there is a problem at check in -- my guest is made to wait and I am out of cell phone range.

Putting 100% down may be his policy --- you may want to find out about his cancellation policy.

If you have any questions, you can call me at 630-927-6669

    Renata Gozdziak

You should phone the Ocean Walk directly and see if the Front Desk will provide you with a comparable rate.

You do not receive any guest services from the on-site employees when renting from VRBO.

You do not receive any guest services from the on-site employees when renting from VRBO.

You will not receive any housekeeping during your stay.

But, staying as the guest of an owner --- you are entitled to all the services that an owner is entitled to and you are also entitled to full use of the facility.

Ocean Walk is a resort that the owner can homestead -- or live at, so you will be renting someone%26#39;s 2nd home -- which is usually maintanined as well or better than the rental condos and you may also be pleasantly suprized to find the condo stocked with those little extras for guests as videos -- games -- etc.

So, yes, if daily or weekly maid service is important to you -- then you may want to check with the front desk.

    Renata

What this owner is doing is perfectly legitimate. It%26#39;s done all the time through vacation websites like VRBO, Vacationhomes.com, etc. If you%26#39;re not comfortable with the rental, ask him the unit number, then verify through Oceanwalk that he is, indeed, the true owner of the property. You are entitled to any and all amenities there at the complex, except daily housekeeping, but that%26#39;s why you%26#39;re getting a less expensive rate.

As an owner -- I would not give out the room number without a signed contract or payment.

    I would prefer that my guests not be bothered by someone who ';Wants a peek for the next trip';--- Yes folks do just ';Drop BY';

Guest%26#39;s Privacy is an issue too....

It would not be a deal breaker for me if I did not get a room number...

    Renata

Thanks everyone for the responses. After investigating more I found he is a owner through worldmark trendwest. Any experiences with this?

Best way from Miami Int Airport to Disney Yacht Club by CAR?

Hi, I need advice. I%26#39;m travelling with a friend and our 2 kids form BsAs to Miami and because of the delays between planes we decided to rent a car at Miami Int Airport and drive to Orlando. Is that wise?

Also we need driving directions to arrive to Orlando safely. I read that are several tolls and that the journey will take us 3hs.

Somebody knows the parking fees at the Parks?

Thanks for your help. I find this forum very usefull.

Best way from Miami Int Airport to Disney Yacht Club by CAR?

depends on how long your delay is....miami airport to orlando about 4 hours via car....take the FL turnpike north to Interstate 4 in Orlando....I 4 West to Disney area....yes there are tolls...not sure how much but bring about $15 with you...prolly won%26#39;t be that much

not sure about the parking fees at the parks but i think around $10

Best way from Miami Int Airport to Disney Yacht Club by CAR?

Yes, Florida turnpike to Orlando from Miami is the best and quickest route, albeit there will be tolls.

Parking fees at Disney are currently $10/day (subject to change any day now) and at Universal it is $11/day. Not sure if SeaWorld has gone up to $11/day yet or not, but definitely at least $10/day.

    Please help, help, help!!! :)

I am this year going to be an Orlando nubee with my 3 kids, and though I am extremely excited about the trip, I am totally clueless about how much spending money to reasonably take to have a good time :(

Obviously, my elder sons want to do all the theme parks, as well as explore as much as possible, though I%26#39;d also be quite happy to relax by the pool with my small daughter.

I%26#39;ve not even a clue about how to price general eating expenses - yep, a complete idiot!!

Please, can anybody who has recently visited as a family of 4 give me some well needed guidance - we are going on a 2 week stay, on a room only basis, though car rental is included in our package.

Thank you for your precious time :)

    Please help, help, help!!! :)

That is great that you are excited!

We went for the first time last May-and I must have spent forever researching everything I needed to know. I would suggest checking out some websites to get an idea of expenses, options, etc.

www.mousesavers.com -this is a great website to start with. It gives a lot of basics, info about food, tickets, lodging, and just about everything else. .

    also, check out:

    www.allearsnet.com

    www.mouseplanet.com

And I would suggest checking out some guidebooks from the library.

    Hope this helps!

    Please help, help, help!!! :)

This is difficult to answer without knowing ages, and which theme parks etc etc.

For peace of mind, you%26#39;ll find most eating experiences are cheaper than the UK.

If you are looking to have some pool time, I%26#39;d look at getting flexible ticket options (look at the Disney Ultimate passes, purchase in the UK which give 14 days unlimited access to Disney Parks, Waterparks, DisneyQuest and Pleasure Island). They are not cheap but do allow you to split up your visits to Disney.

If the kids are older, Universal may also be on the cards, and Seaworld, so same applies there too, and if you are exploring in the car, look at Busch Gardens and the Gulf Coast beaches too.

How much money? That depends, although don%26#39;t take much cash. Travellers cheques are accepted like cash, but a credit card is the best way to purchase most things - just remember it has to be paid back!

You can potentially spend lots there if not careful though, so be aware. If you can find a Walmart, do an hour or 2 shopping there for snacks and drinks for your stay - will save some money.

As just 2 adults, we take about 拢1000 to be safe and normally come back with some leftover in 2 weeks. But that does not include the tickets to the parks, or Gifts/Clothes which go on CCards.

hi we are a family of 5 myself, hubby and 3 kids.....

we take about $2000 for the 2 weeks for the adults the kids have there own money which we give them over the year in dollars for doing chores etc also give them dollars for bdays and xmas and ask friends and family to do the same, when this is all collected together we break it down into 14 days and put the amount for each day in a envelope so they have there own spending money per day to spend on whatever they want and we do not have to say no to anything as we tell them if its gone its gone (cruel to be kind but you can easily over spend)

eating well prices varey from place to place depending on what budget your on

for example if you are going to eat on site at disney you can easily look at paying $100 for a meal for your family at a top resturant

then it goes down in stages to about $80 for a middle style resturant all the way down to a few $$$ at all you can eat buffet places scattered all over orlando there a a few chains of these sizzlers, pondsrosa etc

to cut down on being ripped off in the parks for drinks we take bottled water that we buy from the supermarket and freeze it overnight its alot cheaper than paying the ott prices at the parks also we take a small cool bag with biscuits, crips fruit etc in mainly because we get fed up eating chicken nuggets and hotdogs or burgers....

also we take in the cool bag wet wipes that we have kept in the fridge over night as the humidity and heat can be at bit much at times.

thank you kindly for your replies and info. much appreciated :)

It is a long time since our first trip to Disney, but we economised by eating in McDonalds most nights - I know not healthy at all but the kids loved it - which then was about a third of the cost of McDonalds in England. We stayed in a hotel at Lake Buena Vista where kids under 12 had free breakfast which helped.

We also found a self service restaurant just off International Drive called (I think) Morrisons, but I don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s still there. There are quite a few reasonably priced chain restaurant/diner type places and of course the buffets may be a cheaper way for you if your kids have good appetites. The Subway sandwich chain is quite reasonable for a sandwich when not in Disney.

The most expensive places to eat we found were anything connected to Disney.

I would think about taking plenty of snacks like crisps etc when in the park to keep them going, then taking them to a buffet in the evenings to fill up.

I went with just a friend and we each got through approx $30 per day in the parks and eating out etc but we did economise by getting Pizza, going to Maccy Ds or KFC (which by the way is so weird... whats with the dumpling and gravy? what happened to fries) or getting sandwiches form the hotel Delis.

In the day at parks they have lots of hot dot stalls etc and counter service places where you can get a ';meal'; for one (like burger and fries and a drink) for about $5... or at least that was the prices in 03

I wouldn%26#39;t worry about eating alot of junk while you%26#39;re over there - the amount of walking you%26#39;ll do around parks etc will EASILY burn it all off. I actually lost weight despite eating rubbish every day

Oh and MaxiMax - Remember at the moments the Conversion GBP to US dollar is about 拢1-$2

Take that into consideration when being told prices in dollars - the UK price currently is about half that x

For a two week stay last year I took 拢1000.00 ( around $1700 at the time) just for me and I came home with 拢150

This did not included park entry, however i bought so many gift s out of it ( 6 tops, 4 perfumes, loads of disney/universal stuff etc..) plus all my food and drink.

Seems like a lot for one, but i was very free with money and never worried about money or paying for taxis etc.... you could do it on a lot less. I found america very reasonable compared to british prices.

Hi cynjoy...when we stayed in Madeira Beach in March, we rented from a lady by the name of Cathy Roberts, at %26lt;www.floridabeachvacationcondo.com%26gt;. She was very helpful, and the condo was beautiful, and central to everything we were interested in doing/seeing. Good luck.

  • Any feedback on ';Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa';

Has anyone stayed here? I am looking at booking it for a trip in May of this year?

    Thank you!

    Any feedback on ';Westgate Lakes Resort %26amp; Spa';

Alot of what I have seen is pretty negative. Go to the TA reviews and see for yourself before you reserve, and be aware the will give you a very hard sell for buying a timeshare.

    Any feedback on ';Westgate Lakes Resort %26amp; Spa';

Hi, I own at Westlake Lakes Resort and have done a lot of moaning about it on these forums. However, my major complaints have been about the hard sell of the reps there (even after you have bought, when you go to use the timeshare they invite you to attend a %26#39;maintenance report%26#39; meeting which is an excuse to sell you more weeks) and the economics of owing timeshare in general.

So here are the good and bad points of staying at Westgate:

    Good points:

I can only speak for the unit we have stayed in which is in 2400 building and overlooks the lake directly, but it is in reasonably good condition, lovely view (you can see the Epcot fireworks from the balcony), spacious accommodation. On arrival you follow a rep in a golf buggy to the unit so you can%26#39;t get lost. The resort is very convenient for Seaworld, Discovery Cove, Disney and Universal.

It is situated on a quiet road (runs alongside the I4) and is good for quick trips up to Publix (out of the resort, turn left and left again at Sandlake and it is just a little way up the road on the left).

    Bad points:

Try not to attend the sales presentations but if you do do, do not buy. Be aware that the reps are very persistent and very good at their jobs. If you like the resort buy a cheap resale.

If you prefer wood furniture and fabric sofas, you may not like the units. They all have leather sofas and the furniture is, to be honest, a bit %26#39;plasticy%26#39;. Some of the corners get a bit tatty. Other than that, they are ok really. The balconies are a good point - spacious and with comfortable patio furniture.

I am happy to try and answer any other questions you may have.

I have stayed there twice. Once, when my kids were toddlers and, recently with middle-schoolers. It is not a fancy resort. It IS good place for families. There%26#39;s much to be said (financially) about having the ability to throw together some sandwiches or a bowl of cereal. It is also a nice way to spend time together, casually, and not have to worry about enforcing etiquette or waiting for a table. In fact, my best memory of my 2006 trip was enjoying wine %26amp; munchies (from Publix) with my hubby. We were sitting on our little patio, listening to jazz. Our kids were within eyesight at the pool. They got their space %26amp; had fun; so did we.

As for the salespeople, a ';no thanks'; works. If you have no interest: DO NOT ATTEND. One woman I met last year said that she tells the reps, ';Oh, I have bad credit';! That cracked me up.

Westgate Lakes is close to the parks %26amp; you can park your rental car in front of your unit.

This resort was on my starter list when I started looking for a place to stay. After reading negative reviews on this site, I crossed it off.

I would suggest reading all the reviews here, and make a decision. I decided to go with the Floridays resort instead. Good luck!

Every place you go you%26#39;ll have problems cause everyone is different so what you expect someone else might say something about that it all depends on the person cause you can%26#39;t please everyone all they can do is try there best you have to make that judgement for yourself go or don%26#39;t go I%26#39;ve stayed and didn%26#39;t have any problems because I%26#39;m not looking for any alot of times when you look for something that%26#39;s whenn you%26#39;ll find a bunch of stuff my opionion I had no problems you have to make that desicion for yourself

Avoid this renter like the plague

I have recently posted a report about Madeira Norte, but thought it best if I also wrote more about this in the forum.

6 of us left Scotland for what was supposed to be the holiday of a life time. We took months planning out all the details and we all looked forward to our 2 weeks in the sun. The flights were booked through Flyglobespan [who were brilliant], our car was booked and two units at the Madeira Norte. We arrived on Saturday 5th August and stayed in a Holiday Inn near Sanford Airport for our first night. [due to wanting to enjoy the full hospitality of the stewards on the plane and so we would be fresh for our journey the next morning]. We arranged pick up of the keys for one unit by accessing the owners post box and the other renter was to meet us there. Everything went to plan and Don Fowler was at the unit and showed us around. Hmm, slightly disappointed as the description of the unit mentioned %26#39;luxury%26#39; which was not the first word that sprung to mind on entering the apartment. However, it was cleanish and was really only somewhere to lay our heads - right?

Everything was fine, until we all started itching two days later. We came to the conclusion that the unit was riddled with fleas. We had to buy spray and fumigate the place. Then the cockroaches visited us on several occassions. Not your normal cockroach - flying ones! [called Palamenos]. To top it all off the owner phoned us on our first Saturday there and insisted that we moved out a day early as he had a renter who had obviously booked after us. He needed in on the Saturday to clean the place [yeh right]. Despite having booked until the Sunday and all agreed and written via email. The man was vile. I would advise anyone who is thinking about going to Madeira Norte on Madeira Beach to stay well clear of Don Fowler and unit 416.

I will be driving up from the keys sunday night,Feb 25 and need to find a place to sleeo that night. Need nothing fancy,in at 10:00 PM and out at 5:00 AM. Would like safe and clean room ( and I hope cheap also ).

    Hotels near FLL

If you have ben scanning the forums of SE Fl, you have come to realize that the cost of the hotels tooms do not mesh with the quality.

It seems Lulu may have hit the nail on the head when she brought up the idea that the mega ships leaving both Fort LAud/Hollywood and Miami ports are using the hotels to put up some of their guests.....and there aren%26#39;t enough rooms.....so the operators have been raising rates.....a lot.

Remember, you are about two miles from the beaches of Fort LAud and Hollywood (more or less) even if you try for a beachfront hotel, but even those small mom %26amp; pops are charging more.

    Some highly rated are:

    Holiday Inn.....Sheraton Street

    Days Inn on 29th Ave

La Quinta Inn on 26th Ave

Sleep Inn (Dania Beach) on 5th Ave (May have free shuttle)

    Sheraton Dania (On Griffin Rd)

(THere is a motel 6 in Dania that is on Dania BEach Blvd just east of the Daina Fontron...but really rated bad...it costs a lot less....)

There are a lot of places of the Hollywood BEach that aren%26#39;t really out of your way, but many of these beachfront places may not have room for just one night:

If you didn%26#39;t, you also need to post this in the Ft LAuderdale forums, as well.

The Marriott Hollywood Resort is also pretty nice, with much easier access to the boardwalk, and the fun along the oceanfront. But the pool isn%26#39;t that great. Same here...look for deals via AAA %26amp; other groups.

I would not recommend any Ramada run hotel in this area.

Now, right on the Boardwalk, there is the Atlantic Sands. Very small amount of rooms, but the rooms are like small apartments. It is a top rated here on TA, and the folks that run it are very service orientated.

If you are familiar with timeshare, there are some OK units on the beach. One right next to the MArriott is the www.hollywoodsands.com

Another is the Hollywood Beach Tower, all one bed 2 bath sleep 6 units

I will list many of the places so you can check on some you might like:

South of Sheraton to about Garfield is quite built up, with many small (TIDE/SeaDowns complex)...and the Marriott Resort. (Next to the T/S called www.hollywoodsands.com )

There aren%26#39;t many restaurants on the B%26#39;Walk until you walk past Garfield (going S)...and they continue till about you pass the Ramada Hollywood BEach Resort. (NO NO NO)

    Mom %26amp; Pop:

She can%26#39;t post this, but the Atlantic Sands (no pool, very cozy) has special pricing for military, reserve, other government workers (ie- teachers-retired). Very helpful with advise on TA.

    www.atlanticsandsfl.com

Across the street is the Carribean Apt hotel resort (?) hotel used loosely here, also no pool....which has good pricing, and is on the beach. The pix was taken (it appears) from the roof of the Atlantic Sands :) Look carefully....this is what many of the Hollywood units will look like. THey were not built recently. (They may have been built before wall board, I would say the mold issue might be mute in many of the places. I assume the concrete block doesn%26#39;t grow mold. (However, if the place has carpeting, most do not) there might be a problem.

    http://www.mycaribbeanresort.com/

    Also check http://www.mantarayinn.com/

With a pool and one we have liked is the http://www.tideapartments.com/ The German management (also French Canadian) here runs the three complexes, Tide, Broganvilla (best value) and the Sea Downs. SSL rated.

Although it appears http://www.greenbriarbc.com/about.htm is still closed, they are putting people up in their completely redone (down to the wall board) units in their one %26amp; 2 bedroom condos. (La Playa). Very nice, beach sand is the front yard, as the Hollywood B%26#39;walk goes along the rear of this section of Hollywood ...called the Flowers Section

There are literally dozens more small places from the 1930s, 40s and 50s.....and Hollywood is still considered a blue collar beach...where else can you walk along the b%26#39;ealk and get a 16 inch Brooklyn Pizza (plain) with a pitcher of beer or soda for $17.00?. Ice cream cones for $1.40 (not at the Hagen Daz or Edies shops), a French Canadian twin lobster (Florida) for $15.99???

    the Hotels:

Also, supposed to be completed (ha ha) is the Grand:

    http://www.hollywoodgrande.com/ (Starwood possible management)

What is completed it the Westin Diplomat Beachfront Resort, on the old Diplomats property. It is also beach front, and IMO pretty expensive*

The Marriott took the Howard Johnson Hollywood Beachfront Hotel, and made it into an old English/ West Indies paradise:

TA members have reported finding very good deals at the Marriott Hollywood Beach Resort. Not so good deals at the Westin

    When to go

We are currently planning a trip to Orlando. There are 2 major concerns: crowds and hurricanes. Original plan was mid-August but mid June or July is now a consideration. What would be the best time with these options?

    When to go

To miss the largest crowds of the summer, your original plan of mid-August might be best. However, August is prime hurricane time.

June/July would be less of a chance of hurricanes, but still a possibility, since the season runs from June through November. However, your crowds will be larger then too.

There%26#39;s no way to avoid the possibility of a hurricane completely unless you come from Dec. to May typically.

1 Day in Miami pre-cruise with Kids

Hi, we are arriving in Miami at 830AM Sunday and our cruise leaves late Monday afternoon so I need a hotel for 1 day.

I see lots of recommendations for the Holiday Inn being a great pre-cruise hotel but it seems to be downtown. I would rather stay where we could walk to the beach and then taxi to the port the next day. Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

1 Day in Miami pre-cruise with Kids

Downtown Miami is not a pedestrian-friendly area. I would suggest staying in a hotel on South Beach to enjoy the interesting art-deco architecture, many shops, restaurants and the beach -- all within walking distance. It is not a long taxi ride from there to the Port of Miami, and it is a scenic ride over the intracoastal waterway with a view of exclusive islands and beautiful homes.

1 Day in Miami pre-cruise with Kids

I agree stay some where on South Beach. Go to the Miami Beach forums and I am sure AdvisorGirl has hotel suggestions post some where on there.

ACK never mind, I screwed up! I do not watch football, LOL. So I gave up on coming in the 4th since there are no hotels to be found for less than a grand. New problem: getting in around 830AM and have to kill time before getting on the cruise ship. I would like to go buy diapers, etc.. instead of pack them. Any suggestions for grocery/target type store and restaurant somewhere between airport and cruise port?

  • Steak in Paradise

We have guests arriving today, and after a few meals of seafood I expect them to ask, where can we get a good steak. I know Michaels and Commodores enjoy great reputations, but is there someplace a little less expensive?

Also, what is the deal about goingover to Sunset Key for lunch? Cost? Is the food any good?

    Steak in Paradise

Duffy%26#39;s will be a little less expensive but you really run the risk of eating frozen steak if you get under $20 or so for a filet.

Sunset has mixed reviews--I haven%26#39;t been there since they were new so I won%26#39;t comment. I actually see a few more don%26#39;t than do%26#39;s.

    And they%26#39;re $$$.

Just feed them copious amounts of alcohol. Go back to your room and call Damn Good Food for an awesome steak n cheese.

Set everything out on your balconey or patio and enjoy the evening.

If they%26#39;re buzzed enough just tell them they%26#39;re enjoying the best steak in Key West in a convienent, handy dandy breaded steak holder.

    Or just go to Duffy%26#39;s......... : )

Sorry I don%26#39;t want to imply Duffy%26#39;s is frozen--it%26#39;s not. The same owner also owns Pisces and Commodore, so the food is top notch.

Duffys for bright lights, too many kids, and ok food. Usual 915 has great steaks. A bit pricy, but not as much as michaels.

I have been to Sunset Key 3 times for lunch and all three the food was not good.

There is a TGI Fridays in Key West. Try the Jack Daniels Flat Iron steak Not too expensive %26amp; very tender and delicious. The mashed potatoes are excellent too. They also have good Jack Daniels Ribs.

Jack Flats has a beef brisque with smashed potatos and green beans for less than $13. Red Fish Blue Fish also had a decent steak with spud for about $12. But, I%26#39;d still choose Duffy%26#39;s. And if you have extra $$$, Commodore is fabulous.

The folks that I know who live in Key West rave about The Outback.

They say it is a notch above most Outbacks.

7 Fish has a good NY Strip and the best meat loaf I%26#39;ve ever had. Make sure you make a reservation!

should we stay outside of old town?

i%26#39;m looking into a time share for two couples (we are in our early 30%26#39;s). i found a place, the windward hyatt, which has great reveiws on this site, but it is a bit out of old town. is it a good idea to stay here? we like to party, but we don%26#39;t like to party all day long. i like a quiet day with lots of r and r with party options in the evening. are cabs plentiful and fairly priced? will we be missing out on the key west experience if we stay here?

should we stay outside of old town?

You will probably want to stay in Old Town. Find a guesthouse that offers what you want. We stay 1/2 half block off mid Duval and the loudest thing you hear during the day is the KW chickens which is part of the experience.

should we stay outside of old town?

I agree that you should stay in Old Town. The ONLY thing Windward Pointe has to offer is that it%26#39;s a new, lovely place to stay.

In Key West, though, if your accommodations are in Old Town, everything you want to do will be within walking distance - this includes tourist activities, sunset celebrations, and restaurants.

There are two other timeshares that are in good locations - the Hyatt Sunset Harbor and the Galleon. Both are on the water within steps of the sunset celebrations on the Gulf side of the island. We stay regularly at the Galleon, and while it%26#39;s not new like the Windward Pointe, it%26#39;s nice and the location is hard to beat. It%26#39;s also right next to Key West Bight, which is filled with restaurants and water opportunities - sunset celebrations, parasailing, snorkeling, etc. We prefer to be on the marina side of the Galleon (or directly facing the water), rather than overlooking the pool, which occasionally gets noisy. I%26#39;ve never investigated the Sunset Harbor very carefully, but we peeked into one of their units once and it looked nice. I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll go wrong with either.

I totally agree. If you stay in KW you stay in Old Town.

    ~SRQgirl

Having just returned from staying in the Truman Annex, on Southard very close to the county complex, let me caution you about the construction. While it%26#39;s something that will go away, the noise began fairly early each morning and continued all day. I%26#39;ll never figure out how one piece of equipment was in reverse all day with that beep-beep-beep you hear when it%26#39;s backing up.

We%26#39;ve stayed in the annex before and never a problem...other than the occasional rooster who%26#39;s on the job bright %26amp; early. ;^)

When are you going? We are staying at the Hyatt Windward Feb 10-13th. I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ll post a review when we return. If you search the site you%26#39;ll see I posted several questions about the location. We would much prefer to be in town. However, we have a rate of $197 (including tax) for three days. We figure we will bike into town for breakfast each morning, head back to the resort and relax at the pool all afternoon and take a taxi into town in time for sunset/happy hours..at least that%26#39;s the plan. I%26#39;m not sure if it will work but we figure we are saving well over $600 on our hotel rate so even if we spend $200-$300 on taxis we will still be ahead. The resort and rooms look great so I%26#39;m optimistic we%26#39;ve made a good choice.

Also, I%26#39;ve heard cabs are plentiful but I%26#39;m not sure on the pricing. I%26#39;ve heard as much as $25 into town. However, I read a comment on a recent Fodor%26#39;s board that the rate is about $8. It%26#39;s only 3.5 miles. If it is $25 that is more than NY or Chicago!

As an experienced traveler to Key West - I would suggest the rental of a condo in the Truman Annex - in Old Town, near everything, cheaper than the timeshare rentals. Call Mike at 3053042694 - I%26#39;ve rented from him and had a great time - several sizes available and cost levels. I have stayed in the resorts, the hotels, the guesthouses - and if going with a few friends, I would go with a condo. I just stayed at the Annex in May and it was extremely nice.

I would stay in Old Town. Last year, we made the mistake of staying at a hotel in New Town, and spent 40 dollars each night on cabs back and forth to Duval.

For all the reasons above, stay in old town. The first time we came to Key West we stayed at Southernmost Hotel. Even it was too far away from everything that we wanted to do. Taxi fares are expensive and can add up in a hurry.

I don%26#39;t want to steer this thread, but I had a driver ';meter out'; a ride from Hyatt Winward to Rick%26#39;s Bar on Duval. $13.40.

If you%26#39;re spending $40 for round trip new town/Duval, you%26#39;re tipping very well and including that in your post. New Town to Duval is less than $11.

Don%26#39;t worry about cab fare!!!!! It should not be a deal-breaker either way!

When we took a cab to Duval, it ran between 11-14, and we would just the driver $20.

    fort myers airport to Captiva

I know it%26#39;s about 40 miles from the airport but how long does it usually take with the traffic and all thru Sanibel- on an average day- we arrive 2:15 on a Sunday so around 3ish or so- Thanks

    fort myers airport to Captiva

Well, on a Sunday the construction will be quiet at least. I find it takes me about 50 minutes to Captiva Village. Sometimes a shade longer. The speed limit on Captiva has been lowered to some strange thing - 19 MPH I think along Captiva Drive. The folks who work on Captiva go a little impatient along there and San-Cap Rd but I try very hard to not speed. Sanibel often has speed traps along San-Cap.

Suggestion - depending on your food and drink needs, stop either on island at Jerry%26#39;s [on Periwinkle Way at Casa Ybel] or Bailey%26#39;s [on Tarpon Bay Rd at Periwinkle] to stock up. If you have specialty needs stop off island at the Publix just before the causeway on the left. I have never stopped here so I really don%26#39;t know it. Just don%26#39;t buy frozen stuff like ice cream there. The WalMart is much further back on just before the Rt 41 intersection I think. Also off to the left. I%26#39;ve been in that store a few times and I guess it pays if you have kids. Both Bailey%26#39;s and Jerry do provisioning - you give them a list of what you want and they will have it delivered to you condo. I don%26#39;t know if that includes SSR units since it is now a closed site.

I suggest you drink bottled water and use it to make tea and coffee. Water has a funny taste.

    fort myers airport to Captiva

Sorry, that should have read 60 minutes. A lot of lights along the roads coming into Sanibel and in season there%26#39;s a ton of traffic.
