I%26#39;m at Lighthouse beach right now. It smells , no dead fish (one on the whole beach), but ocean usually don%26#39;t smell like this. It is smell of sewer, really. I%26#39;m not going swim in the water. No comparison with Caribbeann, I will keep you posted after checking out other beaches.

Hello,
.........................
By the way we just arrived here and their is no sign of Red Tide, (we are near Tarpon beach) lets hope it will stay away now.
Anyone who can share current beach conditions, good, bad, or indifferent, please do so.
Beach Reports - Please post here!Great Idea!!
Beach Reports - Please post here!We just returned from Sanibel today. We were there from Friday the 20th to Monday the 23rd. We stayed at Beachview Cottages which I believe are closest to Bowman Beach. But we were all over the Island all weekend.....From the Lighthouse Pier to do some fishing, to our own beach for some swimming %26amp; shell collecting, to Blind Pass for a sunset walk on the beach %26amp; dinner at Lazy Flamingo, all the way to Redfish Pass on Captiva for a Sunset cruise and not a single sign of Red Tide. No smell (and my husband is SUPER sensitive to it), no dead fish....and although the water wasn%26#39;t as crystal clear as I believe it should have been it was still a beautiful bluish-green and as delightful as can be. People were all over the beaches and enjoying it. I will post a full trip report tomorrow in a seperate post. We had a WONDERFUL time!!
Here we go.
Lighthouse beach, Loggerhead area. It%26#39;s ok, some shells, a very little algea. Going further north - Tarpoon beach. You can%26#39;t enter to the water because of huge amount of red algea, I mean HUGE.
Next beach is Bowman beach close to Blind Pass condos. Beautifull beach, a middle amount of read algea. The most beautifull place currently is a beach close to the entrance of Captiva, it%26#39;s clean, water is wonderfull.
Was on Captiva Beach (I think) on Monday. Some dead fish on beach, but it didn%26#39;t smell. Still made me not go in the water, but plenty of folks were swimming. As a plus, the parking machine was broken so we got free parking!!!
Hope this helps.
The red drift algae is affecting the beaches areas along West Gulf. It has been reported as wide as 20 feet in some areas and there are deposits on the beaches in spots. Apparently the change in wind direction caused it to move in. It comes and goes, but sounds like it may be limited to that one stretch of beach.
Red aglae was washed up on the beach areas between the Sundial Resort on down to ward the Lighthouse, the heaviest areas are reported to be in the long beach stretch just west/north of Sundial thinning out as it reaches toward the Lighthouse/east end area.
The algae was pushed up high on the beach due to waves action from the front that has been passing thru. It is 6+'; deep and wide in spots. Dead fish from the red tide bloom off shore seem to have been washed in as well.
On-site updates would be very welcome. So please - current visitors and residents, help here if you can!
Also, just a word of warning - if the algae was deposited very high up the sand, it will not wash away with the next tide and will get very rank in a day or two. It is not edible and birds and scavengers do not eat it - though they may pick thru it looking for goodies.
Yesterday was our last day at the island and we went on 2 beaches - beach where Loggerhead Cay condos located and Blind Pass (Tarpon beach). On Loggerhead area red algea was washed out on the beach and it was quite bad, also on previous week despite reported ';good'; results of the water there were even more dead fishes than before and it started to smell. It was pretty big fishes laying on the beach every few dozens feet . I rented at Loggerhead Cay and I liked accomodations but never went into the water there, it did not appeal to me...
We went for swimming on Tarpon beach (rigth after the bridge between Sanibel and Captiva, on Captiva side) few times. Only once we got lucky, when water was really calm and clear, other days were very windy, but I still was swimming, many people were surfing. Waves bring a lot of shells and it was nice. Beautifull birds were walking among the people there waiting for the treat.
In overroll, this beach was our choice of the week, because other beaches had red algea before and we did not go there other days. I will write my review about Loggerhead Cay later on and will tell about other ups and downs of our Sanibel vacations.
I can definitely say that Turmaline%26#39;s expetise and other reviews were really helping us there.
We returned from Sanibel yesterday 10/29. The weather was beautiful, but a bit windy. There was a storm at sea and on Sunday when we left there was alot of seaweed on the beach. There were also some dead fish. The staff at your hotel said the beach would be cleared in a day or so. Otherwise, things were beautiful! No foul smelling water or anything like that.
We went to Sanibel yesterday. Sorry to say I don%26#39;t know which beach we were on. There was a lot of red algae washed up along with crabs. There was only one dead fish on the beach that we saw. The water was VERY murky and we wouldn%26#39;t let the kids even get their toes wet.
However, Sanibel is a very pretty place and we would like to go back when we know the water is clear. Does that ever happen? Was it murky because, as the above poster stated, there was a storm out at sea? In Palm Beach, the water seems to stay clear even when a storm is brewing.
Babochka - Just so folks know what beach you were on - the beach at Bilnd Pass is Turner%26#39;s Beach, the Captiva side of Bilnd Pass. Great sunsets there as well.
Tarpon Beach is off West Gulf by Pointe Santo Condos.
