Snorkeling when staying in Ft. Lauderdale

We%26#39;re visting Fort Lauderdale for three days/two nights in mid November with our two teenages and want to try snorkeling. From the info on TA it sounds like Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo has the best snorkeling. Some questions:

1) Is it worth the drive to Key Largo from Ft. L to snorkel at Pennekamp? If we do go to Key Largo, which dive company is the best?

2) Are there viable options closer to Ft. Lauderdale and if so, which dive company would you recommend?

Thanks!

Threre is one possibly viable option closer than Key Largo- that would be Red Reef Park in Boca Raton, which is only at most a half hour drive from Lauderdale, probably less depending on where you%26#39;re staying.

I%26#39;ve never snorkled there , but I understand it is very popular because the reef is fairly close in to the beach.

You might google it and see what you can find- I think it%26#39;s a county owned park ( Palm Beach County) and you may be able to rent equipment there and snorkle without a boat ride.

Pennekamp is justifyably famous for snorkling. I don%26#39;t know about companies, but you might post an inquiry on the Key Largo Forum for some locals input.

Pennekamp state park is fantastic for snorkeling and you will not be dissapointed by what you see. The park runs a few boats a day so you don%26#39;t really need a ';dive company'; to see the reef though many do exist. I have done both the park trip and an outside company trip and both were equal in a great time had by all. I do reccomend reservation at Pennekamp though as I once went there without and couldn%26#39;t get on o boat!

Thank you both for your advice. I think we%26#39;ll go ahead and plan a day trip to Pennekamp since it sounds like it%26#39;s worth the drive. Appreciate the info about making reservations too.
