I am planning a vacation in April for my husband, myself, and my 10 yr old son. I am very interest in The Pink Shell. My concern is the location. How far is it from Times Square? We will have a rental car.
Pink Shell LocationThe Pink Shell is at the northern end of Estero Island and an approx. 20-min. walk to Time Square. I prefer the northern end of the island as it is more quiet and has less traffic than other areas. There%26#39;s a park at the very northern tip (just a few doors down from the Pink Shell) called Bowditch park. There are walking trails and many turtles. Your son might enjoy it.
Pink Shell LocationYou can walk to the Times Square Area(which is where the opublic pier is located) directly on the beach or on the street. There are sidewalks on the street side most of the way. I prefer walking on the beach-keep in mind if you%26#39;re coming back after dark-it will be very dark along the water. The street is not a lot better. There is a public park with parking available and also metered parking.
You can leave your car at the Pink Shell if you want to go to Times Square. The road is very flat (unlike New Hampshire :-) so it%26#39;s an easy walk. Your 10 year old will hopefully enjoy the pier and seeing the pelicans that hang around waiting for a hand out! When my dh and I were there this past March, there was a street entertainer out in the middle of Times Square at night and it was fun to stop and watch him.
Yes, the beach is a bit dark for walking back north toward the Pink Shell, but certainly manageable. If you take the street instead, there isn%26#39;t all that much traffic and there are sidewalks.
Have a great time - by April you also will be ready for a break from the snow and cold just like us from Massachusetts!
Thanks for all your input!!!!
Just take the trolley which picks-up and drops off at the Pink Shell.
You can take the trolly anywhere on Fort Myers Beach. You don%26#39;t even need a car.
I hope the Pink Shell has finished its renovation. We were there last year and the noise and dirt were terrible. If they are done, you are in luck.
