Single females - safe and reasonable

I%26#39;m considering taking my daughter and her friend to Key West for their Spring Breatk (they are seniors in high school) in March. I too am female. We have never been to this area, I love to snorkel, and site see and of course they will want to be withing walking distance of high energy activity and guys. Any suggestions? I%26#39;d like to do it as reasonable as I can possibley with a room having a kitchenette to help save a little. Thanks for any information and suggestions.

Single females - safe and reasonable

Almost any of the popular hotels and B%26amp;B%26#39;s are in safe areas and you can walk pretty much to all of the interesting places in Key West without worrying.

There are any number of good snorkeling trips and sunset sails that you can take and it only depends on what fits your time and budget; anything from a 2 hour trip to an all-day trip.

During string break everyone gets carded so your daughters will probably not be able to get a drink and hang at many of the fun places. But there are other alternatives.

Suggestions as to where to stay will depend on you price range.

I was hoping or assuming there would be crowded beaches, lots of guys for them to oggle, beach volleyball etc. I%26#39;m not intending for them to be intoxicated and irresponsible but was hoping that this may be a good place with the tropical feel and ambiance of spring break? Taking them to Jamaica, or Playa del Carmen were my other options, but the food and water in Mexico is scarey, and the men and drug pushers in Jamaica are or maybe intimidating for then. I would have picked Panama City Beach but it will not be warm enought in March for certain.

If you read through the posts here you are going to see that a lot of people don%26#39;t think Key West is a real family destination most of the year and especially during spring break. If you have never been to Key West, I would suggest an adult trip first then decide on whether or not to spend an entire week with kids.

That being said, I bring my teens to Key West every year! but only for day trips. We have been visiting the keys for lots of years and found that the best times with kids are when we stay in Key Colony Beach (there are other keys that are nice, this is our personal fave) and take day trips (a leisurely 90 minute drive) into Key West. You can rent a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo or 1/2 duplex with full kitchen in KCB for around $1000-1300 a week, much better deal than you will find in KW. Most have access to the Cabana Club which has a small game room, bar, grill, large pool and beach area. This is a great, safe place for kids to meet and hang out. My daughter is a junior in HS and very familiar with KW but I would not let her wander around KW unescorted. When with friends, I want her checking in every hour.

There%26#39;s a lot of things to do in and around Marathon, too. Key West has great history, architecture, water sports, sunset celebration and fine food. The lower and middle keys are more laid back and the focus is on nature. More places to snorkle, kayak, beautiful state parks, fishing boats, dolphin and turtle centers, etc.. More of what I consider family appropriate activities.

If you are interested you can check out www.vrbo.com, www.rentalo.com, I%26#39;ve had good luck with both sites. BTW, we%26#39;ll be in KCB the end of March 2007!

After reading your last reply... In general, the Keys are not really known for spring breakers. They are not easy to get to, expensive, don%26#39;t have the wide expanses of beaches and many motels/hotels won%26#39;t allow young adults under 25 staying alone. I think the biggest draw to the keys is the laid back attitude. Maybe try Ft. Lauderdale.

All right. Have lots of info now.

www.athomekeywest.com is great! You can get a place with 1 king/2 twins, small kitchen, pool access for around $1500/week. Great location (IMO there aren%26#39;t any ';scary'; places in KW).

www.trumanannex.com also have 2/1 bath close to the action for around $1000/week.

Duval Square offers 2bedrooms/1 bath for under $1700/week.

If you%26#39;re looking for one room, no kitchen for $100/night, there%26#39;s always Blue Marlin. (I would find more $ to NOT stay there, but if you%26#39;re REALLY stuck for cash, it could be an option.

www.centercourt.com might have what you need, too, for good rates.

Remember that spring break is going to raise the rates. The girls WILL get carded, so you shouldn%26#39;t have to worry about them getting drunk without your supervision.

If you stay close to Duval you will within walking distance to everything---no need for car.

And God Bless all the college hardbodies that will be walking around. They make for nice eyecandy for the girls AND you!

I agree with sharla about Key West and the Keys. Do you really want to risk your High School Girls in Key West (or anywhere) with a bunch of college kids????

I%26#39;ll have two senior boys with me this year as well (3/29 - 4/7). In fact my boys hooked up (not like that) with sharla%26#39;s daughter last year. They spent a day in Key West - with us there in Key West with them.

I too have had my boys in Key West many times, but not alone, and not without checking in with me every so often.

Take a look at www.vrbo.com or www.rentalo.com for a place to stay. You%26#39;ll find homes and condo%26#39;s for rent. Figure out where you want to be in the keys (or in the world for that matter), input your needs for bedrooms, baths, and find a spot.

Good Luck.
