as per other post; we will be touring round during the second week
nice eatery in florida city
James , where are you headed after Florida CIty? I really wouldn%26#39;t be enthusiastic in recommending any of their eating places- to me you would be better off stopping just for a light snack to tide you over and delaying your dining until later- especially if you are headed down into the Keys- the restaurants after you cross into the Keys are much better- Florida City is really just a gas and restroom stop filled with every possible fast food chain- south of you is some of the best seafood you could want- don%26#39;t waste a meal in Florida City- head for Key Largo!
nice eatery in florida city
thanks lulu; but alas we are overnighting in F.C. on the way to the keys, having travelled from orlando via ft lauderdale; which of the fast food joints is least likely to poison us ?
I%26#39;m now recalling that ther might be a Sonny%26#39;s Bar-B-Q there- part of a chain - I haven%26#39;t been to that one but the chain in general is ok - a real All American get sauce on your fingers meal. I think there is also a Denny%26#39;s which I know Brits like and they serve breakfast all day, so you can get thet Egg/Pancake Grand Slam thing and pig out. Two other restaurants there are called Gustos- a sports bar- but may not still be open and not very good- and I think one called the Mutiny- saw a mouse in the dining room the only time we tried it - remember the mouse but not the food. We usually just stop at the Subway and get a nice big sandwich.
But James, I know you will have been driving about 4-5 hours , but if you drive just a wee bit further you can stay in the Keys- why don%26#39;t you check around and see if there is a motel available in Key Largo- I imagine the one in Florida City can be cancelled with no penalty. If you can stand just a little more driving ( maybe an hour at most) you will be so much better rewarded. Poke around on the Key Largo Forum a bit and see if that convinces you.
There are some factory outlets right at Florida City so if you decide to stay there that may entertain you.
I just love the Keys and want you to enjoy it at long as possible. Florida City is just a way station - and sort of devoid of personality- just a string of gas stations, motels and restuarants - mostly of the tourist trap genre ( I apologize to any Florida City folks who may disagree)
I agree with the lack of good eating places in FC but i can recommend Sonnys, the ribs there are great and the corn nuggets are to die for! Another option is to drive down to key largo for you meal, plenty of nice places there to eat and it%26#39;s only a short drive down, it%26#39;s not as if you%26#39;re going to miss any exciting evening entertainment in FC.
One thing you must do if the weather%26#39;s right is to drive into the everglades for the sunset, one of the best in Fl and hang around until it get totally dark, the night time sky is awesome since there%26#39;s no light pollution for miles around - i have never seen so many stars! Cover up and put plenty of mozzie spray on though or you%26#39;ll be eaten alive
thanks for the advice lulu, will try the sonnys or dennys, thats probably where we will have been eating for the first week. alas a stay in FC is pretty concrete, we will have been on the go for some 10 hours by the time we get there as we have some stops along the way and we fancy going to Morikami gardens in ft lauderdale; least i think its there; will have to double check now!
cliver; seeing the sunset in the everglades is one reason we want to overnight as close as poss, we were told the birds roosting by the million is quite a sight;.
cheers for taking the time to answer, we will be moving on to key largo after we have checked out the glades; rather fancy a boat ride at Pennekamp state park before pottering down to key west to see what fantsy fest is all about
You have probably already checked , but if not Morikami is in south Delray Beach-north Boca Raton- about half an hour north of Fort Lauderdale. A beautiful spot - enjoy it and all your travels!
ah yes lulu thanks; that does ring a bell; good job i ve got our intinery all written down isn t it; see ya in a couple of weeks, james
I would stay and eat anywhere but Florida City. It%26#39;s noisy, hotels are run down, not a good choice. If you can%26#39;t make it to Key Largo (only one more hour) than I would stay in either Ft. Lauderdale or Miami.
Key Largo has a restaurant called the Fish House. It has really good food. They advertise the best Key Lime Pie in the Keys and it is. There is a Best Western, a Marriot and a Holiday Inn in Key Largo. From south Miami to Florida City the hotels are pretty bad.
Have a great time in the Keys!
