Car hire - Which firm is best

Gong with Virgin who book cars through Dollar.

Have noticed that I pay on arrival for full tank of gas, and as I will probably hand back with at least a quarter tank, looks like I%26#39;ll be out of pocket the cost of a quarter tank.

Are all hire firms consistant in this?

Also it seems an easy way to make money on top of the hire charges already paid. Wonder how much a quarter tank X number of rentals per year works out at?

Car hire - Which firm is best

This is one of my pet hates and i do my upmost to return the car with the fuel gauge in the red.

macasoma..do what i do and run the tank riht down no fear of runing out as there are garages up to4 mile from orlando int airport if u go via sand lake rd its a breeze..raymond

There are two choices with Dollar - either pay for tank and take back empty or do what I do and dont pay Dollar and simply take it back full!!!

This is really small potatoes. 1/4 tank is probably worth about eight dollars. Over here in the colonies we all live for cheap gas.

What you want to be more worried about , and you don%26#39;t mention it is.

Have you got ';Full Cover'; insurance paid for with the hire agreement. Or do you have to pay for that when you get there.

If you do this will cost you mega bucks. it will make your quarter tank look like pee in the ocean

Can you explain what ';full cover'; means and why I need it?

I have collision damage waiver. Is that the same thing?

Cheers.

CWD only covers damage done to the vehicle you hire . It does not cover any other car / vehicle, street furniture, persons, involved in the accident, Or Police, fire , and ambulance that attends the accident. In some cases it does not cover hire revenue it would have generated had it not been in and accident by spending time being repaired . ie Down time. This down time the hire company may have to hire a vehicel / piece of plant from a third party to cover its commitments.

It is important that you have insurance to cover all of these , otherwise you will have to pay the costs.

Some Flydrives give a car , or include a car but only with the minimum of insurance with it.

ie So long as the hire company gets a repair / replacement it is not interested in other claims.

There is also a large number of UN- insured vehicles / drivers on the road in the US being involved with one of these could be your worst nightmare if you are driving with only CWD.

If you only have CWD when you arrive at the rental station desk they will offer to sell you this @ $45 to $80 a day depending what kind of vehicle you have hired. plus tax, location tax and some other add ons you never dreamed of.

Lots of British visitors have refused this when shown the bill , some have come unstuck.

I know of one , who has had to take out another mortgage for 12 years to pay for a shop window and contents within the shop.

Thankfully no persons were injured, or they would have foreclosed on him for everything he has , and every thing he is likely to earn.

And when he refused to pay they were about to have him deported , and stand trial which may have resulted in a jail sentence.

PS; correction to above;

when you arrive at the rental companies desk they will offer to sell you Additional insurance to cover the remaining items that the CWD does not cover @ etc,,,,,

US citizens generally only take the CWD but use their own insurance cover for the remaining items. But British drivers are not allowed to do this as most of their insurances do not cover vehicles which have been hired.

If you book a car with say UScarhire or for that matter most of the other well known websites the car will come with all the insurances that you need.

mickeuk; That is true. The original post seemed to indicate that the car deal the poster had got was one of the so called ';Free car included'; . I felt the insurance issue ought to be explained if he didn%26#39;t know. which it now seems he didn%26#39;t.

Macasoma , original question was also a bit off target when he asked the question '; Which firm is best '; when he had already done the deal. It would have been more appropriate to ask this before making the booking. Then all the pit falls could have been explained .along with other advise

Its a bit like closing the door when the horse has bolted

He may well have a full cover insurance agreement, but he ought to know if he has or not. He does not want to be buying extra if he has, or not having any if he hasn%26#39;t. Just trying to tell him he needs to be clear in his own mind what he has got.
