Hello, wondering what the weather is like in December? How about water temperature? Also, is Sanibel Island more of a couples vacation or family friendly? Thanks!
Weather in December?Sanibel is consistently voted as one of the top 10 family vacation spots in the US. You%26#39;ll see couples as well and both Sanibel and Captiva play host to lots of wedding and their fair share of honeymoons. It%26#39;s not like a lot of the Caribbean, though, where it%26#39;s far more couples oriented. Just quiet, laid back, outdoors oriented place. It isn%26#39;t a party, dance, nightlife kind of place.
Dec runs in the 70%26#39;s, but can be either hotter or colder and the nights are quite cool. The Gulf runs in the 70%26#39;s. Many condo complexes don%26#39;t turn on the pool heat before Dec 15, so be sure to ask. I got caught like that once and the pool was so cold you couldn%26#39;t stay in the water very long. The resorts usually have the pools heated when it%26#39;s needed.
Weather in December?Tourmaline - Thank you. I noticed you are a ';local expert,'; so if you don%26#39;t mind I have a couple of questions. :-) We are a family of 4, 2 adults, 2 boys ages 12 and 8...what kind of activities would you recommend? As for places to stay, do you have any suggestions? I%26#39;m looking for more info on Sanibel so I was also wondering if there is a recommended website(s)? Oh, and what is the nearest airport? Thanks in advance!
Nearest airport - Southwest Florida International [RSW], about 45 minutes from Sanibel. Nearest MAJOR airport is Tampa [TPA], about 3 hours north, but sometimes the fares are a LOT cheaper flying in there.
For what to do see the following on this site:
tripadvisor.com/Travel-g34616-c2277/Sanibel-…
tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-g34616-i1343-Th…
and www.sanibel-captiva.org [chamber of commerce site and excellent] and www.fortmyers-sanibel.com There is also a sanibel wiki, but I don%26#39;t have the addy handy.
As for where to stay, and not knowing your budget, I%26#39;d say a condo if you%26#39;re in for a week. But do check on the pool heat thing before renting. Just because they have it doesn%26#39;t mean it will be turned on. Ocean%26#39;s Reach, Sanibel SUrfside, Sandalfoot, and Loggerhead Cay are good choices - but there are LOTS of good choices. If you%26#39;re in over Christmas and on a budget, try Sea Shells of Sanibel. Across the street from Pointe Santo and the Tarpon Beach entrance it%26#39;s a very good just off the beach buy.
If you%26#39;d rather have a cottage ON the beach, try Waterside Inn, Mitchells Sandcastles, Forty Fifteen, Island Inn, Tropical Winds and others. The CofC site has almost every place on the islands listed and there are hyperlinks to their websites. There are also links to agencies that handle condo rentals and condo rentals managed by the condo associations [like Ocean%26#39;s Reach, Sanibel Siesta and Sandalfoot].
The biggest activities are shelling, biking on the 24 miles of bike paths, kayaking, fishing - from the Sanibel Lighthouse pier or surfcasting or on a boat - birding in Ding Darling and around the island, excursions to the out islands on Captiva Cruises and just relaxing, but the limks about will have more info.
If you have any specific ideas of things to do, just ask, we have several residents of Sanibel on the forum and plenty of regular visitors [like me]. They love to help!
WOW! Thanks so much Tourmaline! I appreciate you taking the time to list the info and links. :-) I%26#39;m going to check a few things out now. Hope you have a great weekend!
Oops, one more question..as I was checking flight fares I noticed that a couple fly into Fort Myers...wouldn%26#39;t that be the closest airport?
Oops again, my mistake, Fort Myers IS RSW LOL
